Bibliography of the Tabanidae
Updated December 2009
1,201 References

This compendium includes references on horse flies, deer flies, etc. representing about half of the modern (~1970+) literature on Tabanidae. It is relatively complete for modern papers from North America and Africa, with key older references also included. Selected recent papers, and major taxonomic references have also been included from other parts of the world.

These lists were produced from a personal bibliography that I maintain in ENDNOTE X3 format.
See the page Research to obtain a copy of the larger bibliography in various formats (many topics).

Sources - The database includes references mentioning tabanids in almost any context. It was compiled initially in early 2000 from numerous resources with starting dates between 1966 and 1980. The information was updated in early 2002 to round out coverage of the older literature. Hence, coverage of references published from 2000  to date is less comprehensive.

Papers before 1966 were listed only if they were major references quoted in modern compendia. For most of the older literature, it is necessary to consult modern taxonomic references. Theses, extension articles, and abstracts in proceedings were generally not compiled.

Indexing - I entered about 30% of the references from originals in 2000. I have cross-checked as much of the material as possible for accuracy. Abstracts are included for about 75% of the references. I put minimal effort into providing keywords, as modern bibliographic software performs full text searches. In the ENDNOTE database, it is possible to view subsets of references by searching on genus, species or the full scientific name (if the name was mentioned in the title or abstract). Major papers are indexed under the keyword "Review".

The definitive reference on Canadian tabanids was published in 1990, with many useful notes on biology.
The compete publication is available on the web as of 2010 - a wonderful resource.
