Stomoxys calcitrans (stable flies) Russell, Ontario

Stomoxys calcitrans Male 16kStable flies appear in traps in late June or early July and reach high numbers only very late in the season, often reaching a peak just before truly cold weather sets in. The end of the flight season is difficult to specify as stable flies can be seen landing on traps on warm afternoons right up until winter, even if they are not caught.

Captures at my home 1 km from the nearest cattle are male-biased overall (71.2%, N=10,812 to 2008), with a strong seasonal trend (July 81%, August 80%, September 73%, October 58%).
